Humanitarian Response
Emergency Assistance Restoring Safety and Dignity for Earthquake-Affected Families
Background:
Ghulam Nabi, a 45-year-old resident of Chawki District, was among the many families whose lives were devastated by the 6.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Kunar Province. Within moments, the earthquake destroyed his home, damaged his farmland, and wiped out his food supplies and livestock.
Ghulam Nabi and his family were left without shelter and forced to spend nights outdoors under makeshift cover, exposed to cold weather, rain, and the constant fear of aftershocks. Damaged roads and disrupted local markets made recovery nearly impossible.
Objectives:
Through an emergency humanitarian intervention implemented by the Rural Rehabilitation Association for Afghanistan (RRAA) with financial support from Caritas Germany, Ghulam Nabi’s household was identified as highly vulnerable during the needs assessment process.
His family was prioritized due to the complete destruction of their shelter and the total loss of their livelihood. Ghulam Nabi received a comprehensive multi-sector assistance package, including:
- Food rations and Multi-Purpose Cash Assistance (MPCA).
- Tarpaulins, blankets, and kitchen utensils.
- Hygiene and dignity kits.
- A solar panel for electricity and light.
Impact & Success:
The support had an immediate and meaningful impact. The MPCA enabled him to meet his family’s most urgent needs with dignity, while the shelter materials provided protection from harsh weather conditions. The solar panel brought safe lighting to the household, allowing his children to study after sunset and improving overall safety at night.
"The cash assistance gave me the dignity to choose what my family needed most," Ghulam Nabi said. "The food and shelter items helped us survive the hardest weeks."
This multi-sector assistance benefited not only his family, but 986 earthquake-affected households across the Chawki and Nurgal districts of Kunar Province.
