Following the powerful earthquake that struck Nurgal and Chawki districts, the Rural Rehabilitation Association for Afghanistan (RRAA) swiftly launched an emergency humanitarian response to support 986 of the most affected households.
The 6.0 magnitude earthquake caused extensive destruction across the affected districts, resulting in the loss of 1,426 lives and injuries to more than 2,296 people. Thousands of families saw their homes damaged or destroyed, while over 1,018 acres of agricultural land were rendered unusable, severely affecting livelihoods and food security in this mountainous region.
To ensure an effective and targeted response, RRAA carried out a rapid needs assessment in close coordination with local authorities and community leaders. The assessment identified urgent requirements for food assistance, emergency shelter, essential household items, WASH support, and cash assistance.
Over a three-month emergency operation, RRAA delivered a well-coordinated package of life-saving assistance with funding from Caritas Germany. Affected households received:
- Food rations and Multi-Purpose Cash Assistance (MPCA).
- Kitchen items, blankets, and tarpaulins.
- Hygiene and dignity kits.
- Solar panels helping families cope with daily needs while supporting early recovery.
Despite timely assistance, challenges remain significant. Damaged roads, landslides, and difficult terrain continue to limit access to remote communities, while the risk of aftershocks and the arrival of winter increase vulnerability. Women, children, older people, and persons with disabilities remain among those most in need of sustained support.
The intervention was implemented with a total budget of €716,965 (approximately 53,772,375 AFN) and managed in full compliance with donor requirements. RRAA reaffirms its commitment to supporting earthquake-affected families in Kunar Province and strengthening community resilience in the face of future shocks.
